Junior School Student Life
The Junior School experience is centred around a warm and welcoming community, and students get lots of time out of the classroom to explore new interests and to play.
While your child’s time at the Junior School is centred around an outstanding education, being a SMUS student is about more than just academics. Our school is a warm and welcoming community, and students build friendships and skills through experiences in and out of the classroom.
At the Junior School, these outside-the-classroom experiences are largely tied to after-school clubs and activities, and the importance of play.
Clubs and Activities
It’s important for students to start learning how to make and grow in friendships while having fun learning something new. We offer students fun, enriching and inclusive opportunities outside of the timetable in art, music, science, culture, service and other areas. Parents love the wide variety of opportunities offered in one place. Some of the clubs and activities they can join include:
- Art Club
- Buddy Reading Club
- Design Challenge Club
- French Club
- Gardening Club
- LEGO Robotics Club
- Maker Club
- Mandarin Club
- Master Chef Club
- Public Speaking Club
- Sewing Club
- Yoga and Mindfulness Club
The Importance of Play
In an academic context, the role of play can sometimes be overlooked and yet it is vital to development. Play is when children grow their social and emotional skills through curiosity, creativity, cooperation and critical thinking. Play is the most natural and innate activity children can do. Our play spaces are designed to encourage students to move their bodies and express their minds.
We know the value of play, so we embed play throughout the school day for Junior School students. Students have time for unstructured free play three times a day during recesses and lunch.
