The Arts and Service Councils at SMUS are at the forefront of fostering community engagement and shaping students into global citizens. Throughout the year, students take part in a variety of events and initiatives that teach the value of service, teamwork, and creative expression, while making meaningful contributions to both local and global causes.
Students, faculty and staff gathered together today, despite the rain, for the arrival of the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock riders! This is a major initiative these councils champion each year. SMUS students welcomed the riders with open arms, organizing a celebratory event that included activities to raise funds for childhood cancer research and support services at the Canadian Cancer Society. This fundraising event was transformed into a festival of fun, featuring live performances from student bands, open mic sessions, and a memorable moment when faculty member, Richard Primrose, was jailed in exchange for donations to be released.
Year-Round Engagement: Service in Action
The commitment to service at SMUS is a year-round effort, with students actively participating in a variety of initiatives that reflect the school’s core values. One of the highlights of the year has been the student-led Service Council Coffee and Baked Goods Drive. Held in front of School House, this event raised funds for the Island Kids Cancer Association during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Students not only served coffee and treats but also took the time to raise awareness about the cause, engaging their peers and teachers in the effort to support families affected by childhood cancer.
Another signature event was the school-wide participation in the Terry Fox Run, where students joined together to raise funds for cancer research. This annual event is always a testament to the spirit of community at SMUS, as students and staff run alongside each other in support of Terry Fox’s vision of finding a cure for cancer.
Blending Art and Service
The unique partnership between the Arts and Service Councils has allowed for the creative integration of art into service. From designing posters and promotional materials for events to organizing performances that raise awareness for causes, students are learning how to use their artistic talents for good. This collaborative approach ensures that service at SMUS is not only impactful but also engaging and inspiring for the entire school community.
Global Citizens in the Making
At the heart of the Arts and Service Councils’ activities is the goal of fostering global citizenship. Through their efforts, students are learning about issues that extend beyond their immediate community and are finding ways to contribute to solutions. The councils have also helped organize school-wide initiatives that connect SMUS students to global causes. Last year for example, students supported Hope For Youth Uganda through a soccer tournament fundraiser, and Phoenix Ukraine, which was the focus of a raffle.
Each event not only raises funds but also educates the student body on the importance of service and the impact their actions can have on a global scale. By involving students in every step of the process—from planning and promoting to participating and reflecting—these activities are helping them develop the leadership skills and empathy needed to be effective global citizens.
A Lasting Impact
The dedication of the Arts and Service Councils is not only reflected in the funds raised but also in the long-lasting impact these events have on the students themselves. Through their involvement, students are gaining valuable experience in leadership, collaboration, and community engagement, all while contributing to causes they care about.
As the school year continues, the councils have even more planned, with upcoming events designed to inspire creativity, promote service, and bring the SMUS community together for a shared purpose. Whether through a bake sale, a performance, or a collaborative service project, the students of SMUS are proving that they can make a difference in the world—one event at a time.
