Middle and Senior School students this week were treated to engaging and inspirational presentations from guest speakers Roy Henry Vickers and Robert 'Lucky' Budd.
Mr. Vickers is an artist, author and leader in the First Nations community, and Mr. Budd is a celebrated author and historian. Since 2013, the pair has collaborated on eight children's picture books together, merging First Nations stories and history with beautiful original artwork.
For Middle School students, they spoke about storytelling and their history together creating their books. They shared one of their stories, Peace Dancer, and taught students Hoylikila, a Peace Dancer song.
At the Senior School, Mr. Vickers spoke to all students about reconciliation and healing. He told students that as each one of them is a leader, they have the power to make a difference.
"You are the centre of your family; what you do and say makes a difference to everyone in your family. Your family is the centre of your community; what your family does in this community makes a difference to every other family. Your community is the centre of your country; what we Victorians do here makes a difference to Canada. Canada is the centre of the world; what Canada does makes a difference to every other country," Mr. Vickers said. "So when you respect that, what does it come down to? You. You are at the centre of the world and you make a difference."
