Portrait of Anna Burton

St. Michaels University School is pleased to announce the appointment of Anna Burton as the new Director of Advancement.

Anna brings extensive experience in advancement and philanthropy, joining SMUS from the University of Saskatchewan, where she held senior leadership roles, including Director of Development for Institutional Research and interim Campaign and Principal Gift Director. She played a central role in the university’s largest fundraising campaign—a $500-million initiative—while building strong, lasting relationships with donors, volunteers and academic partners.

“I am excited to be joining SMUS and look forward to becoming part of a vibrant, values-driven community that prioritizes innovation, inclusion and global citizenship,” said Burton. “I am passionate about the power of education and the opportunities it can create to transform lives, make change and create vibrant and prosperous communities. I'm eager to support the school’s strong vision and am really looking forward to meeting so many passionate alumni, students and families along the way.”

Anna’s professional background spans the education, health care and arts sectors, while she has expertise in major gifts, donor engagement, campaign strategy and alumni relations. This cross-sector experience has shaped a well-rounded and human-centred approach to donor engagement and community building.

"We are absolutely delighted to welcome Anna to SMUS as the newest member of the Advancement Office," remarked Jeff Aitken, who will join SMUS as Head of School in August and was a member of the hiring panel. "Anna brings a wealth of experience in educational fundraising at the university level, along with a strategic and professional approach that aligns perfectly with our vision for the future. Her appointment marks an exciting new chapter for our school. Building on the strong foundation already in place, Anna’s leadership and expertise will help take our fundraising and advancement efforts to new heights."

"The selection panel—comprising members of the Senior Leadership Team, current Head of School Mark Turner, our Board Chair, the Chair of the Advancement Committee and myself—was unanimous in its decision. We are confident that Anna will be a tremendous asset to our community, and we can’t wait to see the impact of her work."

Originally from Saskatoon, Sask., Anna is excited to embrace life on the West Coast and begin connecting with members of the SMUS community. Her collaborative leadership style, strategic mindset and genuine enthusiasm for people and purpose align closely with the school’s vision for the future.

St. Michaels University School looks forward to the impact Anna will make in strengthening relationships beyond the walls of the school and building on the great foundations laid by former Director of Advancement Shara Campsall. Anna begins her journey at SMUS on July 1, 2025.
