Grade 1
Grade 1 at SMUS supports your child during a significant year of academic and social-emotional growth, and as they develop new confidence in their skills and abilities.
Grade 1 is a year of significant growth in all areas of your child’s life, but a lot of time is focused on continuing to build the foundations of their reading, writing and numeracy skills. Students at this age will start progressing at different paces so we prioritize supporting each child’s specific needs to ensure that their individual growth continues.
In Grade 1, students really come into their own as they develop confidence and autonomy in their learning. Academic rites of passage, such as being able to walk to the school library on their own to choose a book that catches their attention, become more regular. Blending play and joyful learning continues to be a large part of Grade 1. Experiences and lessons help students build curiosity, resilience, self-esteem and teamwork.
Highlights of Grade 1 include gaining a sense of the world and the people around them, and the role they play in their communities through opportunities such as service projects. Students also enjoy learning about fairy tales, including writing and performing their own.
By the end of Grade 1, your child will have made huge leaps in their reading and writing skills, they can do mental math, and they have started to understand their place in the world. Your child’s confidence will have skyrocketed as they feel even more independent and capable in their own abilities. Their sense of curiosity and their creativity will have been nurtured so they bring their enthusiasm and joy for school forward to Grade 2.
