School Approach to Global Events
Our students, alumni, staff, and governors draw on relationships that span the globe. Whether critical events happen locally or abroad, they often become part of our life on campus.
When these moments arise, we focus on our students. At all times they have access to an array of support through related clubs and councils, classroom discussions, a skilled counselling department and our experienced faculty. When it becomes apparent that our students require other forums, special gatherings can offer additional, focussed support.
Through these avenues, we hope that our students will come to nuanced understandings about the world and our place within it, contributing in ways that reflect our Values of Courage, Respect, Honesty, and Service.
To make room for this dialogue with our students, we do not normally make formal statements as a school on critical events. We have learned through experience that these types of statements can have unintended consequences and appear as though the school is choosing a side in a political debate or raising one group of people over another. Such statements can also create an expectation that the school should and will publicly comment on every incident. Rather than enter this arena, we will concentrate on our students.
We understand our role as creating an environment where a diversity of viewpoints can be expressed, providing opportunities for broader thinking and deeper reflection. We strive to be a place that fosters both robust discussion and healthy relationships.
As an international community, we care deeply about what is happening beyond our walls. We express this best when we embody our Vision, Mission, and Values in our work with the students who are in our care.
