When to Apply for Financial Aid

New Families

With finite funds available, we recommend you apply as early as possible in the admissions process. The deadline for new families to apply for financial aid for the 2025-26 school year is March 31, 2025.

You do not need to have applied to SMUS to apply for financial aid. However, no financial aid offer is made until you have an offer of a place at SMUS.

Because of confidentiality, the admissions and financial aid applications are two separate processes. This means that the Admissions team will not know that you have applied for financial aid unless you tell them. Sometimes your Admissions offer will expire before the outcome of your financial aid application (or vice versa). If this happens, you may request an extension from the Admissions office.

Returning Families

For returning families (i.e. families who already have children at SMUS and are returning next year) the deadline for financial aid applications is November 30 in the year preceding the start year. So, for example, for the 2025-26 school year, the deadline to apply is November 30, 2024.

How to Apply for Financial Aid

All applications for financial aid are made online through a third-party organization called Apple Financial Services. Apple Financial Services is a member of Financial Aid for Canadian Students (FACS). By working through their service, we can ensure that your financial information is held in complete confidence.

To apply, you will need to go to the Apple Financial Services website at applefinancialservices.ca. On this website you can also find more specific information and answers to questions. You can also contact Apple Financial Services directly for any clarifying questions you may have regarding the completion of the application and the process in general.

After Applying for Financial Aid

Your application is assessed by Apple Financial Services and a recommendation is forwarded to the school’s Financial Aid Committee.

Decision Timeline

The decision timeline depends on several factors. These include, but are not limited to, the completeness of the application, time of year, volume of applications at Apple Financial Services, complexity of the application and the amount of funds remaining in the school’s financial aid budget. In general, if all documents were provided to Apple Financial Services, most decisions are made within three weeks. Returning families can expect to hear from SMUS in late January.

After Your Financial Aid Offer

If you are awarded financial aid, you will have a limited time in which to make your decision. We ask that you consider accepting as soon as possible, since timely decisions determine how much we can offer to other deserving families, as the year moves along.

Because personal circumstances can change, you will have to reapply for financial aid each year. Please ensure you are aware of the deadline date.
