Ethan Lin

SMUS student Ethan Lin '25 recently completed a transformative research internship at the Deeley Research Centre, where he spent the summer immersed in groundbreaking cancer research. His passion for science, combined with his dedication to learning, has not only shaped his academic journey but also laid the foundation for what promises to be an extraordinary future.

Ethan’s time at the research centre introduced him to the world of cancer immunotherapy and deepened his interest in scientific discovery. One experiment that left a lasting impression was the Western blot, a method used to measure protein masses.

“The most exciting part of the internship was learning about the variety of experiments we could run to address different challenges,” Ethan said.  “Seeing these experiments applied to real-world problems like cancer research made the work feel relevant and urgent. It brought science to life in a way I’d never experienced before.”

Ethan has always enjoyed biology and chemistry at SMUS, and this solid academic interest served him well during his internship. Equipped with an education that focuses on both technical knowledge and critical-thinking skills, allowed him to make meaningful connections between his classroom lessons and his work in the lab.

“In my current chemistry and biology classes, I’m recognizing concepts I first encountered during the internship. It’s amazing to see how what I’ve learned at SMUS directly applies to the world of cancer research,” he shared.

But it wasn’t just the science that captivated Ethan. Working alongside a team of leading cancer immunotherapy researchers in Canada was an experience that he describes as "inspiring and motivating." Weekly meetings, where scientists shared their findings and collaborated on solving complex problems, gave Ethan a glimpse into the innovative world of cancer treatment.

“It was incredible to be part of a team working on cutting-edge treatments," he added. "Hearing about the latest developments in immunotherapy and seeing how these breakthroughs come together was thrilling.”

In addition to working with top scientists, Ethan collaborated with other high school interns from across Victoria, forging connections with students from different schools and backgrounds. Students from Claremont, Stelly's and Esquimalt were a part of the collaboration where they shared results, traded ideas and took in the learning as a group.

Ethan Lin stands with certificate of achievement

This pivotal summer not only ignited Ethan’s passion for research but also shifted his career aspirations. Once focused solely on becoming a doctor, Ethan now envisions a future where he can combine clinical practice with research.

“Before the internship, I was about 80 per cent sure I wanted to become a doctor. Now, I’m also excited about the possibility of clinical research—contributing to new treatments and innovations, not just following established protocols,” he explained.

Ethan shares that his time at SMUS has been instrumental in shaping his ambitions. The school’s emphasis on academic excellence and experiential learning has empowered him to pursue opportunities like this internship, where his skills and knowledge have truly shone. As he approaches the end of his high school journey, Ethan is eager to continue building on his summer experience.

“I’m excited to share what I’ve learned with my classmates and to explore these subjects further in my science classes,” he said with enthusiasm.

Looking ahead, Ethan has his sights set on further studies in medicine and research in the United Kingdom. With his continued academic and personal growth, he is poised to embark on an exciting new chapter, one that will undoubtedly lead to significant contributions in the field of medicine.

Ethan’s achievements exemplify the power of curiosity, hard work, and a passion for learning. His summer at the Deeley Research Centre has not only sparked a new vision for his future but also laid the groundwork for what is sure to be a remarkable career in medicine—one where he has the potential to contribute to life-saving innovations in cancer treatment. SMUS is immensely proud of Ethan and all he has accomplished, confident that his journey is only just beginning.
