In a world often divided by age and distance, two Grade 10 students are bridging generations with a simple act of kindness. Liam Pope-Lau '27 and Kieran MacKay '27 oversee a community-wide movement with the Valentines for Seniors project. Now in its eighth year, the initiative has delivered thousands of handmade cards to retirement communities, bringing joy and connection to seniors across the city.
At Carlton House, residents Ray and Louise were especially touched by the gesture.
“These cards are more than just paper and glue,” Ray said. “They’re a reminder that people care—that we’re not forgotten.”
“It’s not just about Valentine’s Day. It’s about knowing someone out there is thinking of you. That’s powerful,” agreed Louise.
Pope-Lau’s inspiration for the project is deeply personal. Growing up, he crafted valentines with his grandmother every year—a cherished tradition that brought them closer. When she passed away in 2017, the same year he started the project, he channeled the memory of his grandmother into spreading joy to others who might feel lonely or forgotten.
This once-small initiative has grown into a school-wide effort. For the third year, Junior School students created imaginative, colourful cards adorned with glitter, stickers, and messages of love and hope. For many, it’s a chance to express creativity while learning the value of giving back.
This year, Pope-Lau’s dedication to the project was especially remarkable. Fresh off knee surgery and even with crutches, he made sure to personally participate in the Valentine’s deliveries, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the cause.
Together, Pope-Lau and MacKay have delivered cards to retirement homes like Parkwood Place, Carlton House, and Berwick Royal Oak. For seniors, the cards are more than paper—they’re a reminder they’re loved and remembered.
Now a beloved tradition, the project brings together students, teachers, and community members.
This Valentine’s Day, as thousands of handmade cards reach seniors across Victoria, one thing is clear: love is alive, and it’s being spread by the hands of the next generation.
