SMUS is leading the way in preparing students to use artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly while maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity. This commitment was highlighted during a recent visit by Allyson Miller, Director of the Academic Integrity Office at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), who engaged SMUS faculty and students in critical conversations about balancing AI innovation with academic rigour.
Miller’s visit began with a hands-on session in a Grade 12 English class, where students examined the role of AI in academic writing and citation. In class, students explored how AI tools can assist—and sometimes complicate—the process of sourcing and analyzing information. This exercise sparked lively discussions about the ethical use of AI and the importance of critical thinking in an increasingly digital world.
The dialogue continued with department heads and university counsellors, who discussed how SMUS can adapt its curriculum and assessment methods to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. Miller emphasized the need for clear academic integrity policies and innovative teaching strategies that encourage students to use AI as a tool for learning, not a shortcut.
Faculty Leading the Way
In an afternoon presentation for faculty, Miller highlighted the dual role of educators in the AI era: teaching students how to use these tools effectively while ensuring they develop strong analytical skills. She shared strategies like using AI-powered tools such as NotebookLM to create study aids, focusing on students’ ability to select and analyze source material rather than relying solely on AI output.
This approach reinforces essential skills like research, analysis, and independent thinking while promoting ethical AI use. Miller’s insights underscored the importance of ongoing professional development for faculty, ensuring they stay ahead of educational trends and equip students for success.

Preparing Students for a Digital Future
At SMUS, AI is not just a technological tool but a transformative force shaping the future of work and learning. Our goal is to prepare students to navigate this landscape with integrity and confidence, fostering critical thinkers who can harness technology to solve complex problems and make ethical decisions.
Miller’s visit reinforced that the conversation on AI in education is just beginning. SMUS remains committed to integrating AI thoughtfully and ethically, ensuring academic programs stay rigorous, relevant, and aligned with our core values of excellence and integrity. By embracing innovation while upholding academic integrity, we are preparing students to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
At SMUS, we’re not just adapting to the future—we’re shaping it, building a community where technology and integrity go hand in hand, and empowering every student to reach their full potential.
