SS Musical The Prom

Picture this: a stage bathed in dazzling lights, a burst of glitter, and a story that’s equal parts hilarious and heartwarming. That’s The Prom, and this year, it’s taking over the McPherson Playhouse stage in the most fabulous way possible. This production is a full-blown, professional-grade extravaganza that’s as much about sparkle as it is about substance. Buckle up, because this production is about to serve up a whole lot of joy, inclusivity and maybe even a life lesson or two.

Why The Prom?

The Prom isn’t your average high school musical. It’s a glittery, feel-good romp with a big, beating heart. The story follows Emma Nolan, a small-town teen who just wants to take her girlfriend to the prom. Cue the drama, the laughs, and a squad of hilariously self-absorbed Broadway stars who swoop in to save the day. Spoiler: everyone learns a thing or two about love, acceptance and the power of standing up for what’s right.

Students were enthusiastic about the show’s message.

“I think it’s so important for the SMUS community to engage with these themes through a production like The Prom because it promotes inclusivity,” said Chris Chan ’26, who plays the role of Coach.

“Respect is one of SMUS’s core values, and I believe it’s essential to show that respect to everyone,” said Sienna Gill ’27, a member of the Godspell Cast. “This musical reminds us that everyone deserves to feel welcome, especially in a community like ours. It’s about creating a space where everyone, from everywhere, can belong.”

A Professional-Grade Spectacle

The Senior School musical isn’t just a bunch of students putting on a show. It’s a full-blown professional production, complete with jaw-dropping sets, show-stopping choreography and costumes.

Behind the scenes, a dream team of pros—including Ian Farish (Music Director), Christina Banman (Vocal Director), Kelli McLeod (Choreographer), Simone Kuklinski (Production Manager), Krista Jones (Set Design), Peter Leggatt (Set Construction), Alana Green (Costumes), Alli Higinbotham (Props), and Anna Kratofil (Rehearsal Accompanist)—are working their magic to make sure every detail is perfect.

“It is an experience like no other,” described Morgan McLeod, Head of Theatre at the Senior School, about the value of the students participating in an annual production. “A cast and crew are a team that work collaboratively and collectively to create something that will be memorable for both audiences and themselves. Theatre, in general, instills confidence and creativity.

A Launchpad for Future Stars

For some students, the SMUS musical is the first step toward a future in the spotlight. The program has become a launchpad for standout performers, some of whom go on to study at arts schools or even pursue careers in theatre and film. Think of it as SMUS’s very own incubator for the next generation of stars.

The Prom isn’t just a musical. It’s a celebration of everything that makes SMUS special; creativity, inclusivity and a whole lot of heart. It’s a reminder that, no matter who you are or where you come from, you deserve a seat at the table.

So grab your tickets, bring your friends and get ready to laugh, cry and maybe even dance in your seat. Because at SMUS, we don’t just put on shows, we create experiences. And The Prom is one experience you won’t want to miss.
