Recently, I was speaking to a Senior School student who is leaving our school in June, and she was telling me that one of the things she will miss is how much care and support she has received from the adults in her world at SMUS, especially in the last few years. These adults happen to be her teachers, houseparents, homeroom teacher, coaches and academic advisor. This is quite a team of people who have helped her feel welcome and supported through her journey over the last couple of years as we worked through the pandemic. I’m sure that this is a common sentiment shared by students in all grades.
The quality of care that exists at our school is both extraordinary and consistent. Each school and boarding house has structures in place to oversee student well-being and success. Our teams work together and with students and their parents to navigate these important years of learning and preparation for life.
All of our teachers and staff go above and beyond to ensure that our students receive the best possible experience at SMUS. Demonstrations of learning, concerts, art exhibitions, extra tutorial help, commitment to clubs and councils, musical productions, science fairs, robotics competitions, public speaking events, teacher coaches – the list goes on!
As a school, we look to resource these events appropriately through our operational budget and Annual Appeal, but ultimately it’s the teachers who make the experience impactful and memorable for our students. The preparation and time commitment for these endeavours are significant, and we must recognize the passion, dedication and perseverance of our teachers so that our students continue to thrive at SMUS. They certainly deserve an expression of gratitude.
Our Parents’ Auxiliary and parent volunteers take the time to express their gratitude exceptionally well every May at the Staff Appreciation Lunch. We walk into a gymnasium that is beautifully decorated, enjoy delicious food, and beverages and leave with prizes and goody bags. This is always a special day for us and we certainly appreciate all of the effort and care that goes into this event.
So, students, before you leave for the summer holidays and take advantage of the various opportunities now open to you, don’t forget to say “thank you” to your teachers! Whether you send an email, handwrite a note, drop by your classroom and have a quick word or choose a grand gesture like a tribute gift in their name to the Annual Appeal, be sure to express your gratitude to those that have made a difference in your SMUS story. They will certainly appreciate hearing that from you as they soon head off on summer holidays to refresh and rejuvenate for the next academic year.
