Grade 5 students with the cheque they presented to Jeneece Place

At SMUS, service initiatives are more than just activities—they are meaningful opportunities for students to build leadership skills, practice decision-making, and contribute to their community. This sentiment came to life in the first half of the school year when Grade 5 students undertook a student-led service project in support of the Children's Health Foundation of Vancouver Island's Jeneece Place.

Jeneece Place is a “home away from home” for families with children receiving medical care at Victoria General Hospital and was the cause chosen by Grade 5 students to support.

The connection to Jeneece Place started in October when SMUS took part in a magical Pumpkin Parade that brought together students, families and the community. The backyard of Jeneece Place was transformed into a glowing wonderland featuring over 100 jack-o-lanterns carved by SMUS's Grade 5 class and students from Eagle View Elementary. Attendees sipped hot apple cider, captured memories at a festive photo booth, and could vote for their favourite pumpkin creations—all while supporting a vital cause.

A Junior School toonie drive raised $308.75 in support of the event so proceeds proudly went directly to the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, which operates Jeneece Place.

The success of the Pumpkin Parade inspired another meaningful initiative during December’s Season of Caring. Junior School students raised funds by completing extra chores at home, contributing an impressive additional $1,447—far exceeding their goal. Students collectively agreed that supporting Jeneece Place, once again, was a worthy cause.

Together, Grade 5 students came together to collaborate, think critically, make a decision about their impact and create meaningful change in their community. Through their dedication, they demonstrated that even small actions can have a lasting impact and it's undoubtedly a strong theme in the service efforts of the Junior School.
