SS Business Baking Club Jane Lee

What started as a late-night cookie session in Timmis House has blossomed into a thriving initiative that’s making waves at SMUS. Jane Lee ’27, the founder of the Business Baking Club, is proving that a passion for baking can be more than just a hobby. It can be a force for community impact.

From karaoke nights to bake sales

The idea for the Business Baking Club sparked during a casual baking night, where Lee and her friends were whipping up chocolate chip cookies, singing karaoke and brainstorming. A simple suggestion, “You should start a club or even a business,” turned into a concrete plan within half an hour. With the support of sponsor teachers Ms. Adamson and Ms. Gardiner, the club officially launched, and it has been on a roll ever since.

The club operates as a catering-style service, partnering with other school groups to host bake sales. Its first collaboration with the Red Cross Club was a resounding success, featuring an assortment of treats, including Lee’s first-ever attempt at macarons. The result? A $50 investment turned into more than $400 in profits.

“It was so rewarding to see how much of a difference we could make,” Lee said.

Inclusivity at the heart

One of the club’s biggest challenges has been ensuring that both boarding and day students can participate. To bridge the gap, the club is developing pre-made baking mixes that day students can take home, bake and return for sales.

“It’s all about making sure everyone feels included,” Lee explained.

This commitment to inclusivity reflects the club’s mission to bring the SMUS community together, one treat at a time.

Lee credits SMUS’s supportive environment for helping bring her vision to life. From peers who encouraged her to start the club to teachers who provided mentorship and funding, the encouragement has been overwhelming.

Her executive team includes Rina Tanaka '26, Zara Chee '26, Sophia Huang '25, Helena Kim '28 and Rina Chida '27. They play a key role in managing everything from budgeting to social media. Together, they have created a well-oiled machine that is as efficient as it is passionate.

A recipe for success

Lee has big plans for the Business Baking Club. She envisions expanding its impact through collaborations with more school groups and experimenting with cultural and elaborate desserts. She is also considering hosting baking workshops and themed dessert tables for school events.

Her next event? Supporting the Pride Alliance Club for Pride Week.

Lee’s journey is a testament to the power of creativity, collaboration and community support. She encourages fellow students to pursue their ideas, no matter how small they seem.

“Just go for it. Start somewhere and see where it takes you,” she advised.

With its next bake sale on the horizon, the Business Baking Club is just getting started. So next time you see a table full of cookies, cupcakes or macarons at SMUS, remember: Behind every treat is a story of innovation, teamwork and a whole lot of heart.
