Track and Field

The SMUS Track and Field team had a strong showing overall at the Vancouver Island Championships held this past week in Port Alberni. Thirteen Blue Jag athletes qualified for the provincial meet that will run June 6-8 in Nanaimo.

In Senior Boys’ competition, Leupold Wang of SMUS won gold in the triple jump and qualified for the BC meet in triple jump, long jump and high jump. Will Cuddihy turned in a strong showing in the 1,500-metre racewalk and qualified for the provincial meet, as did Owen Sandquist-Sherman with a second-place Island performance in the 3,000 metres.

In Senior Girls events, Abby McLeish-Shaw cleared a season-best 1.40 metres to qualify for provincials in high jump and also turned in a strong showing in the 100-metre final, finishing sixth overall and just missing out on making the BC meet for that event. Amelie Fleck turned in a strong showing in the 400-metre hurdles and qualified for provincials. The SMUS 4x100m relay team – consisting of McLeish-Shaw, Maya Achuthan, Annabel Howard and Roberta Lee – finished third overall, running a season-best 53.63, and will compete at the BC meet.

In Junior Boys, Parker Sheehan recorded two personal bests and qualified in both the 200 and 400 metres. Tommy Hong cleared a season-best 1.65 metres to qualify in the high jump. Harry Lynch posted a personal best in triple jump at 11.40 metres to make the BC meet. Meanwhile, the SMUS 4x100 relay team recorded a season-best 47.33-second clocking.

The SMUS Rowing team logged its final training sessions during the past week before departing for the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association (CSSRA) championship regatta in St. Catharines, Ont.

The national event, which will be held on the two-kilometre Royal Canadian Henley Regatta Course, begins Friday and concludes Sunday. Twenty-three SMUS rowers across 10 events are competing in the CSSRA championships. The championship will be live streamed.

SMUS will conclude pool play on Thursday at 9 a.m. vs. Port Coquitlam’s Archbishop Carney.

Senior Girls Rugby

The SMUS Senior Girls enter this week’s BC Rugby Sevens Championship tournament in Abbotsford as the No. 1 seed.

The Blue Jags have been slotted into Pool E in the 16-team tournament and will play Heritage Woods of Port Moody, Surrey’s Elgin Park and Kamloops Westsyde in Thursday’s preliminary pool play. Quarter-finals, semifinals and finals go Friday, meaning a grueling six games in just two days.

Blue Jags’ Assistant Coach Ian Farish says roster management is key to ensuring that the Blue Jags reach Friday in good shape to make a title run. The Blue Jags were runners-up to Claremont in last year’s tournament.

Senior Boys Rugby

The SMUS Senior Boys will kick off the BC Boys AA Rugby Championship tournament with a match against Earl Mariott of Surrey on Wednesday in Abbotsford, beginning at 2 p.m.

Collingwood enters the eight-team Tier 1 AA tournament as the top seed with Robert Bateman second. The semifinal round of the tournament will be played Thursday with the finals on Saturday.
