Before joining the SMUS community in 2015, Ruth’s career in education had been spent mainly teaching all things English language.
Raised in Victoria and migrating to Alberta after her first degree, her first teaching job took her abroad, to Budapest, Hungary. She spent six years teaching IB English Literature and coaching speech and debate before heading to Cambridge to pursue her master's degree.
After coming back to Canada she returned to teaching AP Literature, Drama and Public Speaking/Debate at Pacific Christian School. When the opportunity came to join the SMUS community as a university counsellor and academic advisor, she was keen to move into an advising role. “I really enjoy asking the questions that really help them evaluate their passions, and their life goals and values,” she says.
In her spare time, Ruth enjoys singing with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir, travelling (especially to New York City), nurturing her growing houseplant collection, and taking seaside walks.
