Mathew is currently the Head of Mathematics having taught at the school since 2001. He believes in a balanced approach to the subject that develops a depth of understanding and skill, builds competence, confidence, and mastery. Mathew is also the vice-Chair of the Ministry of Education Numeracy Assessment Leadership team, working to support students and educators as the e-assessment technician. He is co-author of calculus worktexts and co-founder of an online assessment tool for standards-based assessment called Markury.
Mat lived at SMUS from 1999-2020 as a houseparent, becoming the Senior Houseparent of Barnacle House in 2008. He also served as the faculty representative on the SMUS Society Board of Governors from 2016 to 2021.
Mathew is a SMUS Lifer alumnus of 1993. While at school, he was an all-rounder, fully immersed in sport, music, and academics. He went on to receive a BSc from UVic with a double major in Mathematics and Psychology, and a BEd at UVic, before completing an MMT (Masters of Mathematics Teaching) with excellence at the University of Waterloo.
